Featured Animals - Holding Out for a Hero

On this page, we feature special cats and dogs currently waiting at our shelter for the right adopters. Every so often at our adoption center, we take in an adoptable animal with special needs. Maybe there's a pet too energetic for the average household, a dog who requires a special diet, or an FIV+ cat who needs to be placed in a home with either no other cats or another FIV+cat.

These pets might ask of their companions more care, time or energy and in return, they will offer more love, gratitude and satisfaction to their dedicated guardians. Take a look at our current featured animals and better yet, stop by our adoption center and offer them a visit.

Buddy would love to play fetch, especially if there’s more than one tennis ball. He is a sweet and friendly lab that loves everyone he meets, including children. He would do best as the only dog in the home; Buddy wants all the family love to himself!

Raven

Raven
ID: 19077734
Gender: Female
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Color: White and Brown
Age: 8 months

Description: Some dogs welcome new experiences and new people. They look forward to any opportunity to socialize. They're often the first to introduce themselves and they jump into a stranger’s lap easily. Being friendly and outgoing is natural, energizing, and fun. It doesn't take much effort at all. Other dogs are more like our sweet little Raven. She prefers to warm up slowly to new people or situations. Some people may mistakenly think that Raven is standoffish. But it just takes time to get to know her. Raven's closest friends know she is a spunky, cuddly dog who likes tiny pieces of chicken. Many dogs with a shy personality are especially caring toward the people they know, and interested in how they feel. People often consider them the finest canine companions. If you are patient, caring person with a quiet home, Raven may be the match for you.

Age: 8 years

Description: Shorty seems to have drawn the short straw for the moment, but spend some time with him and you'll soon discover just how long he is on love. This poor guy was recently returned to us after 7 years in a loving home because of a family member's allergies. He is just a bit confused right now, as you might imagine, but he is still sweet as pie. With a little TLC, we imagine he'll be wagging his little nub in no time.

Tikka

Tikka
ID: 05746309
Gender: Female
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Color: Black & Orange Tortoiseshell
Age: 8 years

Description: Pretty tortie Tikka lost the only home she knew since kittenhood and is very sad and confused to be in the shelter environment. She has begun to gradually adjust, and enjoys soft talk and gentle pets under her chin and on her cheeks. She will need a patient adopter who will give her time to acclimate to a new home, where we feel confident she will once again blossom into a sweet and more confident kitty. She can be nervous about hands approaching too quickly and would do best in a patient, adults-only home with patient and experienced adopters. Please consider giving this darling girl a second chance in life.

Nashville

Nashville
ID: 18700055
Gender: Male
Breed: Border Collie Mix
Color: Black and White
Age: 10 months

Description: Though a long way from the music city, our boy Nashville could sing a country song or two. After all, it ain't easy being a homeless pup, don't you know. But he chooses to look on the bright side and keep his tune positive. He loves to run and play, and with smarts like his, training is not only fun, but necessary to keep that brain occupied. He's such a leggy fellow who weighs in at just over 60 pounds, we'd like him to go to a home with no toddlers. Older, respectful children should be just fine. If you've got a hankerin' for a down-home doggie to fill a hole in yer heart, shuffle on over and meet Nashville.

Camellia
ID: 19157575
Gender: Female
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Color: Brown & Cream Torbie
Age: 11 months

She can be a little shy before she gets to know you, but being hard to get is all part of her game, as once you win her heart, it’s yours forever. Camellia has lived with other cats here at the SF SPCA so it is likely she will get along with another cat in her new home if her new guardians can provide a slow introduction. Looking to adopt a pair? Camellia and her roommate do not have to go home together but they make a great pair and we hope you will consider adopting them as a duo.

Frazier

Frazier
ID: 09057370
Gender: Male
Breed: Labrador Retriever/Doberman Pinscher Mix
Color: Chocolate and Tan
Age: 4 years

Description: Frazier is loyal, handsome, housebroken, and well mannered. He was in a happy home and due to family changes found himself at the shelter. Without the love a special someone, he felt very stressed (wouldn't you?!) and went to a foster home where he showed off his previous training and adjusted readily to a quieter environment. In no time, he was snuggling up with his foster mom and playing perfect fetch in the back yard. If you have been looking for the perfect canine companion and who has the manners to adjust to your lifestyle easily, Frazier just may be the one you have been looking for. He would prefer to be the only dog in an adult home with a yard where he can enjoy a game of fetch with his special someone. Frazier currently weighs about 70 pounds.

Huddle

Huddle
ID: 19077730
Gender: Male
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Color: Beige
Age: 8 months
Description: Huddle likes to cuddle! He will curl right up in your lap. When he’s really comfortable, he will snore softly. He is a curious guy who likes to investigate things and survey the scene. Huddle can be shy when it comes to unfamiliar people and new situations. There’s nothing wrong with that. Anyone who’s been a “wallflower” in their lifetime is sure to understand his personality; lonely, misunderstood and just looking for one kind person to be his friend. With patience and gentle handling Huddle will learn to trust you and he will be your BFF. With patience and compassion, this guy will blossom into the playful, boisterous pup he wants to be! He LOVES to play with other dogs and would like to go home with another doggy friend that can show him that the world is not as scary as it seems.
