Dr. Simms was born and raised on the sunny island of Singapore in Southeast Asia. She graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. She did a small animal medicine and surgery internship in Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital. Shian has been practicing emergency medicine in the Bay Area since 2002. Apart from trying to keep up with the constantly evolving aspects of emergency and critical care medicine, she also has special interests in pain control, hematology and cytology as well as animal welfare issues.
When not at work, Shian spends her time windsurfing, practicing yoga and pilates, tennis and quilting. She currently lives in Walnut Creek with her husband Adrian and their 3 cats.
Dr. Simms understands and speaks Mandarin; and understands Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew.
