Celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week!

Oct 15-21, 2023, marks the 30th anniversary of National Veterinary Technician Week and the SF SPCA is celebrating the expertise and amazing work of our Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants.

This national recognition week exists to honor and spotlight the profession and the incredible work vet techs do. These hard-working people do so much more than assist veterinarians, they are essential to how patients receive care in the veterinary field.

What are Registered Veterinary Technicians? They provide both foundational and elevated patient care. They perform diagnostics such as radiographs, blood draws and lab work, patient care in ICU, anesthesia, surgical assisting in surgery, client education, critical care and triage and so much more.  RVT’s (Registered Veterinary Technicians) provide patient care like human nursing, attend formal schooling, and sit for the state boards.  Veterinary Assistants are trained on the job and/or may attend a veterinary assisting program to provide many parts of the foundational patient care and client education.

The SF SPCA provides the best patient and client experience and a big part of how we do that is by being dedicated to the education and engagement of our vet techs.  On our current team, we have helped develop more than 30 of our 50 RVT’s and trained many of our 43 veterinary assistants. We take pride in our work in the low-stress, fear-free patient care that we provide.

As we look at the crisis of access to care that the nation is facing, credentialed vet techs and veterinary assistants are an integral part of the solution. California and the nation are recognizing the knowledge and skills of credentialed vet techs and how we can elevate the profession even more. The SF SPCA is a leader in how we develop, train, and value our vet techs and vet assistants.

Thank you, Vet Tech’s, for everything you do. We recognize and appreciate your essential work and dedication. Next time you take your pet to the vet, be sure to give your Vet Tech a big THANK YOU!
