Over the last 14 months the SF SPCA supplied more than 4,000 bags of Purina cat and dog food to the Mission Food Hub, which provides groceries for thousands of local families impacted by COVID-19. Since August 2020 we supplied over 34 tons of pet food, which kept thousands of dogs and cats fed a healthy and consistent diet. These donations also helped keep pets where they belong – in their loving homes – regardless of family resource constraints.
At the onset of the pandemic, the San Francisco Mission neighborhood had the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in San Francisco. Unemployment and income reduction hit the neighborhood hard, and in response community partners set up the Mission Food Hub to offer residents fresh and healthy groceries.
The pet food bank was added to the Mission Food Hub in summer 2020 and filled a substantial and unmet need in the community. This pet food bank, made possible by Purina, became the largest of its kind in the Bay Area and helped people feed their pets during the darkest days of the pandemic.
Now, 14 months later, the Mission neighborhood is much improved. COVID-19 rates are low and on par with the rest of the city, kids are back in school, and employment has been on the rise since summer. The Mission Food Hub has seen a 66% decrease in patrons to the foodbank since August 2020.
