In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 20-26, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who are the backbone of the San Francisco SPCA. Our mission to ensure every companion animal has access to quality medical care, compassionate shelter, and a loving home wouldn’t be possible without their dedication.
In the past year alone, nearly 1,200 volunteers generously gave over 96,000 hours of their time to walk dogs, socialize cats, feed animals, vaccinate pets at our Mobile Vaccine Clinics, and so much more. These volunteers are more than helpers; they are vital members of the SF SPCA community who create lasting impacts on the lives of pets and people alike.
Our volunteers: A critical part of the SF SPCA
Our volunteers support animals in countless ways. Through our foster program, 335 foster volunteers cared for 1,162 animals in their homes, giving adoptable animals a safe space as they wait to be adopted.
In addition, our 172 Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) teams—featuring dogs, cats, bunnies, and even a pig—spread joy and comfort throughout the community, making meaningful connections with people in need.
Our volunteers’ dedication extends far beyond our shelter walls, helping us expand our reach through the Community Cats Program, advocacy efforts, and public outreach. Without them, we couldn’t do what we do.
Thank you volunteers!
To our volunteers: Thank you for the hours of patience, kindness, and love you give to our animals. Your commitment touches every corner of our organization—from our shelter to the streets of San Francisco and throughout California. Whether you’ve helped a scared kitten learn to trust, assisted a family at a vaccine clinic, or supported our advocacy work, your contributions are invaluable.
